I've never cared much for hot weather, which is surprising since I'm from the Philippines and for a good portion of my life lived in Texas and southern California... Perhaps it is because hot weather makes me so drowsy and makes me feel lazy. I'm quite sure I resemble a grumpy desert lizard most of summer. I've never had a pep in my step when it's 80 degrees and the sun feels like it's lightly scorching my skin and there isn't a cloud in sight nor a welcome breeze for a respite of air.
So I hope you'll pardon me a bit for getting a head start into dreaming of Autumn weather and transitioning my Summer wardrobe for Fall (the BESTEST season). We haven't had much rain here in Portland lately and most of our outdoor plants outside the shop have not survived the intense sun and heat.
Over the weekend my husband did some yard work trimming the rosemary and box hedges and I had the front door wide open and the scent of rosemary mingled with the smell of cinnamon rolls I was baking that morning. I thought to myself, what a lovely blend of scents for August. Half summer, half Fall. Rosemary, cinnamon, and burnt sugar.
On the first real rain shower that signals Autumn is nearing soon (usually late August) I always make myself a big piping cup of hot coffee with an indulgent amount of heavy cream I've whipped and a dash of cinnamon. Then I like to lean into the door frame on our back porch and listen to the rain pitter patter on the roof as I cradle my cup of coffee. It is one of my favorite things to do.
